PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Indigenous Hydrogen Passenger Train

The pilot will test a domestically designed fuel‑cell system with a new Jind hydrogen production and refuelling facility to inform a proposed expansion to heritage and hill routes.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the 10‑coach hydrogen train on Friday and it began pilot commercial runs on the 89 km JindSonipat section.
  • The trainset has two hydrogen driving power cars and eight trailer coaches, a combined propulsion rating of about 3,200 HP, and a passenger capacity reported at roughly 2,600.
  • Indian Railways built an integrated hydrogen ecosystem at Jind that uses electrolysis to produce hydrogen, stores nearly 3,000 kg on site, and has received PESO approval.
  • Both the train and the Jind facility underwent independent assessment by TÜV SÜD and include layered safety systems such as leak, flame, heat and smoke detectors plus automatic hydrogen shutoffs and continuous monitoring.
  • Railway officials say the pilot will inform a proposed 'Hydrogen for Heritage' rollout of up to 35 trains with estimated costs of about ₹80 crore per train and about ₹70 crore per route for refuelling infrastructure as part of India’s green‑hydrogen and net‑zero goals.
