Overview

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram on May 2, 2025, marking a major milestone in India's maritime infrastructure development.
  • The project, developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) in partnership with the Kerala government, represents India's first dedicated deep-water container transshipment port.
  • With a natural draft of 20 meters and proximity to global shipping lanes, the port is designed to handle up to 5 million TEUs annually, with plans to triple its capacity in the coming years.
  • The Kerala government contributed two-thirds of the ₹8,867 crore project cost, the largest-ever state investment in any port, and oversaw key infrastructure like the breakwater construction.
  • During the event, PM Modi highlighted the port's role in recapturing transshipment revenue lost to foreign ports and took a political dig at opposition leaders sharing the stage with him.
