PM Approves DB Patil Name for Navi Mumbai Airport

The designation will be formally adopted when passenger operations begin after assurances that paused a planned march by local groups.

Overview

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the airport will be called "Loknete D. B. Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport" following the Prime Minister's nod.
  • The state said the official naming will be announced at the start of passenger services, with preparations continuing during the current dry-run period.
  • Local leaders suspended an October 6 protest after the assurance, though organisers said their campaign will continue until the name appears at the facility.
  • The government will withdraw cases filed against activists over the naming agitation, including those lodged under COVID-era provisions, subject to judicial process.
  • The Centre is finalising a uniform policy on airport naming, related proposals for Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar remain under consideration, and the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the airport on October 8.
