Plex Begins Enforcing Paywall for Remote Streaming, Starting With Roku

Remote playback of personal libraries now requires a paid pass on Roku, signaling Plex’s shift to monetize server features.

Overview

  • Plex activated its subscription requirement for remote access on the Roku app this week, following rules announced in March and effective since April 29.
  • Remote streaming now requires either a Plex Pass held by the server owner or each remote viewer to have a Plex Pass or the lower-cost Remote Watch Pass.
  • Plex says it will extend the requirement to Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV and third-party clients using its API in 2026.
  • Streaming on a local home network remains free and unaffected by the change.
  • Plex Pass pricing rose in April to about $7 per month, and Plex introduced the Remote Watch Pass as a cheaper option, though reports differ on its exact price.
