Overview

  • Playtonic announced the layoffs in a May 30 statement on X and Bluesky without specifying how many employees were affected.
  • A LinkedIn post by brand manager Anni Valkama showed that artists, game designers, narrative designers, producers and UI/UX specialists were among those let go.
  • The developer said the cuts reflect “a period of profound change in how games are created and financed” and stressed the decision does not reflect the talent or dedication of departing staff.
  • Founded in 2014 by former Rare developers, Playtonic has released two Yooka-Laylee games and published ten indie titles under its Playtonic Friends label.
  • Despite the restructuring, the company remains on track to launch its remaster Yooka-Replaylee later in 2025.
