Playden Turns Jailbroken PS5s Into Steam Machines

Using a PS5 port of Wine to run Windows Steam games in isolated per-game apps, the launcher highlights fast homebrew progress along with security and compatibility limits.

Overview

  • Playden is an open-source alpha launcher that lets jailbroken PS5 consoles sign in to Steam, download games and run Windows versions locally, with the first public release on October 12 and a v0.6 update the week of October 26 adding USB/FTP imports plus 120Hz and 4K display options.
  • The software runs games through prospero-win, a PS5 port of Wine, using DXVK for Direct3D 8–11 and VKD3D‑Proton for Direct3D 12 while packaging each title into its own isolated 'bottle' and separate PS5 app and Home-screen tile.
  • Compatibility is experimental and uneven: many older and indie titles run, some AAA games reach menus, and a community test showed Cyberpunk 2077 reaching early gameplay using roughly 3 GB of VRAM but without measured frame rates.
  • The developer warns of concrete risks: Playden stores real Steam session tokens unencrypted, can write to Steam Cloud, grants elevated rights to running games, and requires a jailbroken, firmware-dependent PS5 plus root helpers and payloads.
  • The project shows rapid technical progress in the PS5 homebrew scene yet faces hard blockers such as kernel-level anti-cheat, DRM and launcher dependencies, so most users should expect a PC or Steam Deck to remain the more reliable option while the community continues testing.
