Playa Unión to Pilot Green Flag for Water Sports Authorization in Summer 2026

Lifeguards will control use within an expanded sports zone, using daily assessments of sea conditions, the shoreline, crowding.

Overview

  • The Municipality of Rawson will test a new green-flag signal at Playa Unión during the 2026 summer to indicate when water sports are permitted in specific sectors.
  • The trial remains exclusive to Playa Unión for now, with no announced plans to extend the system to other Atlantic coast beaches.
  • Sector lifeguards will decide when to raise or remove the flag based on sea state, coastal conditions and the number of bathers in the water.
  • A raised flag authorizes activities such as surfing, kayaking and personal watercraft; removal signals athletes must stop and clear the area.
  • Authorities also expanded the designated nautical-sports zone from the small breakwater to Plaza de los Inmigrantes, adding two lifeguard posts to the north to reduce conflicts with swimmers.
