Plaskett Fire Nears Full Containment as Crews Shift to Mop-Up

Overview

• The Plaskett Fire has burned about 29,942 acres and reached 83% containment as of Saturday, Sept. 12, according to incident updates.
• Fire managers ended night shifts and moved crews to day operations to focus on mop-up, patrol, extinguishing remaining heat, and suppression repair while releasing personnel and equipment to other incidents.
• U.S. Highway 1 remains closed between Los Burros Road (mile 11.1) and Kirk Creek Campground (mile 19) and multiple evacuation orders and warnings are still in effect with at least one zone downgraded to a warning.
• The nearby Timber Fire continues at roughly 25,420–25,426 acres with about 27% containment, three firefighters were injured earlier on that blaze, and air operations were temporarily halted after an unauthorized drone entered the no-fly zone.
• Steep, roadless terrain and decades of heavy fuels in the Ventana Wilderness force heavy reliance on aircraft, dozers, tactical firing and UAS for suppression, and both fires remain under investigation which could extend containment timelines without significant rain.
