Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to Pause Abortion Appointments Oct. 1 After Medicaid Ruling

The pause follows a First Circuit ruling letting a one-year Medicaid ban for abortion-providing clinics take effect.

Overview

  • The organization says the pause is intended to preserve Medicaid funding for non-abortion care while court challenges continue.
  • The federal budget provision bars Medicaid reimbursements for a year to any entity that provides abortions and received more than $800,000 in Medicaid in fiscal year 2023.
  • PPWI will keep its 22 health centers open for contraception, STI services, cancer screenings and other care, serving about 50,000 patients, roughly 60% of whom are on Medicaid.
  • Patients seeking abortions will be referred to Milwaukee’s independent clinics Care for All and Affiliated Medical Services, and to Planned Parenthood sites in Minnesota and Illinois.
  • Abortion remains legal in Wisconsin after a July state Supreme Court decision, and PPWI says it will resume abortion care as soon as legal and operational options allow.
