Overview
- Beginning Oct. 1, Planned Parenthood Arizona will stop accepting Medicaid patients and suspend Medicaid-covered care including STI testing, cancer screenings, contraception and family planning.
- The move responds to a provision in Trump’s fiscal plan that blocks Medicaid reimbursement for one year to nonprofits that perform abortions and received more than $800,000 in Medicaid payments in 2023.
- A Massachusetts district judge initially blocked the policy as likely unconstitutional, but a federal appellate court on Sept. 11 allowed enforcement to proceed while lawsuits continue.
- Planned Parenthood Arizona operates seven clinics statewide, four of which provide abortions, serving communities in the Phoenix area as well as Tucson and Flagstaff.
- The suspension affects many low-income Arizonans, with about 1.9 million people enrolled in AHCCCS, and the organization warns the nationwide rule could jeopardize care for over 1.1 million Medicaid patients; patients can call 1-800-230-PLAN for help with alternatives.
