Overview

  • Crews launched phase one on Aug. 19 by building a temporary ramp to bring heavy equipment into the river corridor.
  • More than 750 tons of steel and concrete from the old State Route 49 bridge, destroyed after the Hell Hole Dam failure in 1964, are slated for removal.
  • Public-safety measures include a 25 mph limit on SR 49, reduced shoulder parking near Calcutta Falls, and a closure of the Calcutta Falls Trail.
  • Water recreation is closed between the Old Foresthill Road Bridge and No Hands Bridge, with the nearby beach area scheduled to close after Labor Day on Sept. 2.
  • The effort, supported by roughly $8 million in state funds following advocacy by Protect American River Canyons, is expected to continue through the end of 2025.
