Pix Registrations Top 1 Billion Keys in September
Rising use of random codes to protect personal data is increasing pressure on regulators to tighten fraud-prevention rules.
Overview
- Banco Central data show the Pix system had 1.008 billion registered keys at the end of September 2026, up from 998 million in August and about 920 million at the end of 2025.
- More than half of keys are randomly generated codes, with 526.8 million random keys recorded in September 2026.
- 956.7 million keys were linked to individual customers and 51.2 million to companies, meaning many users hold multiple keys and total keys exceed the roughly 170 million Pix customers.
- The underlying SPI handled heavy activity in September 2026, processing 7.1 billion transactions that moved about R$3.2 trillion.
- The Banco Central is studying additional anti-fraud measures such as blocking unauthorized new key creations, and users can view and manage their keys through bank apps and the BC's Registrato service.
