Pix Payment System Briefly Disrupted Nationwide

The central bank has opened a technical probe to find the cause of an outage that interrupted commerce, raising questions about its operational limits.

Overview

  • Users and merchants across Brazil reported failures on Sunday, August 23, with Downdetector logging a one-minute peak of about 2,400 reports around 8:00–8:17 a.m. and roughly 13,800 total notices over three hours.
  • The disruption blocked or delayed transfers and merchant receipts, with shoppers and app users reporting errors in QR payments, mobile apps and instant transfers.
  • Complaints rose simultaneously for at least a dozen major banks and fintechs including Banco do Brasil, Caixa, Itaú, Bradesco, Santander, Nubank, Inter, C6 and Mercado Pago, consistent with a central-system fault rather than a single bank outage.
  • The Banco Central confirmed the instability was identified and that services were restored, said technicians found no signs of data theft or fund diversion, and reported that a technical investigation into the root cause is under way.
  • Pix is Brazil’s main instant-payment rail that moved tens of trillions of reais and billions of transactions in recent years, so regulators and markets will watch the probe for signs that funding, staffing or infrastructure choices are affecting system resilience.
