Pittsburgh International Opens $1.7 Billion Terminal With 12-Lane TSA Checkpoint

The right-sized design replaces the 1992 hub-era layout to prioritize origin-and-destination travelers.

Overview

  • An overnight switchover deactivated the old landside terminal and retired the underground tram, with a new skybridge now linking security to the existing concourses.
  • TSA’s consolidated checkpoint is fully operational with 12 lanes, CAT-2 identity verification, automated screening lanes, CT scanners and real-time queue displays.
  • United flight UA794 from San Francisco was the first scheduled arrival at 5:12 a.m., followed by Southwest flight WN1841 to Denver as the first departure at 5:30 a.m.
  • A fully automated checked-baggage inspection system is live, and luggage now travels about three miles less through the system, improving delivery times.
  • Gate capacity has been reduced from 75 to 51, wayfinding and flight displays have been overhauled, parking and new roadways are open, and the $1.7 billion program is funded by airline agreements, airport revenues and about $130 million in federal infrastructure funds.
