Pippa Scott Dies at 90 After Screen Stardom and Human Rights Leadership

The Searchers and Auntie Mame actress founded the International Monitor Institute to gather evidence for war crimes prosecutions before passing May 22.

Overview

  • Scott, born Nov. 10, 1934, in Los Angeles to screenwriter Allan Scott and stage actress Laura Straub, launched her career with a 1956 Broadway debut.
  • She portrayed Lucy in John Ford’s The Searchers (1956) and interior decorator Pegeen in Auntie Mame (1958) before guest-starring on series including The Twilight Zone, Perry Mason and Columbo.
  • In 1964 she married producer Lee Rich, with whom she divorced in 1983 and reunited in 1996, remaining together until his death in 2012.
  • Motivated by her uncle Adrian Scott’s blacklist experience, she founded the International Monitor Institute in 1993 to assist war crimes prosecutions in conflicts from the Balkans to Congo.
  • She died May 22 at her Santa Monica home of congenital heart failure and is survived by daughters Jessica and Miranda and five grandchildren.
