Pimec Report: Catalan SMEs’ Profits Surge as Productivity Slips on Service‑Sector Tilt

Pimec warns that a growing reliance on lower value services is undermining output per worker and calls for investment to lift productivity.

Overview

  • Operating profits at Catalan SMEs rose 15.6% in 2023, outpacing average wage gains of 3.7% to 6%, according to Pimec’s Anuario.
  • Productivity per worker fell 2.2% to €77,407 as employment increased 5.2% while gross value added rose 2.9%.
  • Industry lifted VAB by 7.1% with employment up 0.8%, while services saw VAB dip 0.3% despite a 2.6% rise in jobs.
  • SMEs remain the backbone of Catalonia’s economy, representing 98.9% of firms, 64% of VAB and 60% of employment, even as large companies gain weight.
  • The 2023 findings, drawn from Registro Mercantil and INE data and presented with Banc Sabadell, underpin Pimec’s push for scaling and productivity upgrades.
