Pilsen Resident Charged With Hate Crimes and Aggravated Battery in Mural Defacement Case

Her arrest follows community pressure on prosecutors to bring hate crime charges over the June attack on a Mexican-Palestinian solidarity mural.

  • Danielle Wasserman, 37, was arrested on August 8 and faces four counts of aggravated battery, two counts of hate crime and one count of criminal damage to property.
  • Authorities allege she defaced the mural near West 16th Street and South Ashland Avenue on June 13 by painting “THANK YOU ISRAEL,” burning off the Palestinian figure’s face and spreading feces.
  • During the same incident, Wasserman is accused of hitting Natalie Figueroa in the face and head with a metal three-hole punch and pinning her to the ground.
  • On May 9, she allegedly attacked a 24-year-old who identified as Laith by attempting to choke them with a scarf after being caught throwing trash near the mural.
  • Her first court appearance is scheduled for Friday at Chicago’s Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
