Pilot Rescued After Single-Engine Plane Crashes in Southern Indiana Woods

Federal investigators are now processing the remote crash site in Orange County.

Overview

  • Indiana State Police were alerted around 10 p.m. Saturday to a possible downed aircraft near the Orange–Lawrence county line.
  • Search teams found a Lancair single-engine plane and its pilot around 4 a.m. Sunday in dense forest near Old Vincennes Road.
  • The pilot was discovered inside the wreckage with non-life-threatening injuries and was carried out by stretcher through steep, brushy terrain.
  • Nearly 60 firefighters and 20 officers assisted in the quarter-mile extraction after a multi-agency overnight search.
  • The FAA has been notified and will lead the investigation, with Hoosier National Forest and the U.S. Forest Service returning to the site Monday to assist.
