Piero Masztalerz Wins 2025 German Cartoon Prize as Philipp Sturm Takes Silver

A traveling exhibition now opens in Bremen, extending the prize’s reach into 2026.

Overview

  • Masztalerz received the Gold ‘Geflügelter Bleistift’ and €4,000 for “Abwarten,” with the jury praising its bitter, clear critique of complicity and how autocrats can rise through flawed elections.
  • Sturm earned Silver and €3,000 for “Jetzt seid ihr dran!,” a wordless image of a child before a gallery of fallen soldiers that distills a generational reckoning with military legacies.
  • Katharina Greve took Bronze (jury-cited for precise, ironic critique), newcomer Robert Claus won €1,000 for “Taxi Mama an die Front,” and total prize money reached €11,000.
  • Mario Lars was named the public favorite after roughly 1,800 exhibition visitors cast votes for his work.
  • Selected cartoons will tour Bremen (Nov 3–Jan 23), Dresden (Nov 8–Feb 22), and Agathenburg near Hamburg (Mar 1–May 3), following a competition that drew 1,208 submissions from 262 artists under the motto “Jetzt seid ihr dran!”
