Piauí’s GDP Hits R$80 Billion in 2023, Up 3.1% in IBGE’s New State Accounts

IBGE’s latest data show two-decade gains that moved Piauí from 23rd to 21st in the state GDP ranking.

  • Piauí’s output ranks as the seventh-smallest among Brazilian states by value in 2023.
  • The 3.1% annual increase was the fifth-fastest in the Northeast and the 16th nationwide.
  • By GDP level, the state stands ahead of Rondônia (R$77 billion), Tocantins (R$64 billion), Sergipe (R$61 billion), Amapá (R$42 billion), Acre (R$26 billion) and Roraima (R$25 billion).
  • From 2002 to 2023, Piauí’s GDP rose 111.8% with an average annual gain of 3.6%, trailing only Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Roraima, Acre and Mato Grosso do Sul in cumulative growth.
  • National output remains concentrated, with São Paulo at R$3.44 trillion or 31.5% of Brazil’s GDP, and all 27 states recorded growth in 2023.
