Photographer Captures Rare Battle Between Canada Goose and Bald Eagle on Frozen Lake

A 20-minute struggle between the birds, seen as symbolic of Canada-US tensions, was documented by an Ontario photographer.

Mervyn Sequeira, a 74-year-old amateur photographer from Ontario, captured a dramatic encounter between a Canada Goose and a bald eagle on the frozen waters of Lake Ontario on February 23, 2025.
The bald eagle, the national bird of the United States, launched multiple attacks on the Canada Goose, which defended itself fiercely for 20 minutes before the eagle eventually retreated.
The encounter has been interpreted by many as a metaphor for current tensions between Canada and the US, including a recent trade dispute involving new tariffs imposed by both nations.
Photographer Sequeira noted the goose appeared to be sick or weakened, possibly due to bird flu, making its survival against the eagle even more remarkable.
