Overview

• The trial went live on 29 September, letting passengers board after tapping in on an app that records where they leave the train and settles the fare at day’s end.
• Participants receive up to £15 in free travel credit, added automatically to their account.
• A unique in-app barcode is used to pass station gates and for on-board ticket checks.
• Northern will extend the pilot to Sheffield–Doncaster on 27 October and Sheffield–Barnsley on 24 November.
• The scheme builds on an East Midlands pilot that reported positive feedback and is supported by nearly £1 million in government funding under the Plan for Change.
