Overview

• Officers responded around 10 p.m. Wednesday to a 911 text reporting a domestic violence incident at an apartment near 31st Avenue and Bethany Home Road.
• Police say they saw a man in his mid-30s holding a toddler with a machete and refusing to release the child or surrender.
• A less-lethal tool was used but was ineffective, after which an officer shot the suspect.
• The suspect was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, later stabilized, and is expected to survive, with booking planned upon his release.
• The toddler sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital, no officers were hurt, and DPS is leading the investigation; Arizona’s Family counts this as the 30th officer-involved shooting in the county and 61st statewide this year.
