Philippine Radio Journalist Juan Jumalon Fatally Shot During Live Facebook Broadcast

Attackers posed as listeners, killed journalist at home studio, and fled with stolen gold necklace; This is the fourth journalist murder under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s term.

  • Philippine radio broadcaster Juan Jumalon was fatally shot twice in his home studio during a live Facebook stream. The assailants posed as listeners to gain entry into his home.
  • The attack took place in the town of Calamba, in the Misamis Occidental province. The gunman also stole Mr. Jumalon's gold necklace before fleeing on a motorcycle with an accomplice.
  • Jumalon's murder is the fourth journalist killing under the term of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and the 199th since democracy was reinstated in the Philippines in 1986.
  • Despite having more press freedom than other parts of Asia, the Philippines is ranked as the eighth worst country concerning the prosecution of killers of journalists according to the Global Impunity Index.
  • President Marcos Jr. condemned the attack and assigned the national police to track down, arrest, and prosecute the killers.
