Philadelphia Medical Examiner Reaffirms Suicide Ruling in Ellen Greenberg’s 2011 Stabbing After Court-Ordered Review

The court-ordered review cites forensic and timeline evidence to support the suicide classification.

Overview

  • Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Lindsay Simon’s 32-page report, signed Oct. 10, concludes Greenberg’s manner of death is best classified as suicide following a settlement-mandated reexamination.
  • Simon reports no defensive injuries, no sign of a struggle or intruder, the fiancé’s DNA absent from the knife, and a corroborated timeline via surveillance, keycard, phone logs, and interviews.
  • The review notes many wounds consistent with hesitation injuries and updates counts to 23 stab and incised wounds and 31 bruises, with three additional superficial skin perforations identified.
  • Attorneys for Greenberg’s parents call the report deeply flawed, alleging omitted or misstated evidence including 3D reconstructions, unexplained bruises, missing surveillance, and a disputed autopsy artifact, and they plan to continue legal efforts.
  • A court hearing is set for Tuesday in Philadelphia to discuss the review; no one, including fiancé Sam Goldberg, has been charged, and the original autopsy doctor has recently urged a classification other than suicide.
