Philadelphia Extends Twice-Weekly Trash Pickup to North Philadelphia on Jan. 5

New trucks plus new hires expand capacity for the next phase.

Overview

  • The expansion will cover two zones: Vine Street to Hunting Park Avenue from Broad Street to the Schuylkill River, and Vine Street to Glenwood Avenue from Broad Street to the Delaware River.
  • The second weekly pickup will occur three days after the regular collection day, recycling stays on the original day, there is no second pickup during city holiday weeks, and set-out times remain after 5 p.m. in fall/winter and after 7 p.m. in spring/summer.
  • Mayor Cherelle L. Parker’s initiative adds capacity with roughly 60 hires and 20 trucks, backed by $11.9 million for the launch plus an additional $7 million for vehicles.
  • City data from the pilot areas show cleaner streets with a 15%–22% decrease in illegal-dumping complaints and improved scores on the Detailed Litter Index.
  • Officials anticipate a learning curve, are conducting outreach meetings, ask residents to report missed collections to 311 for 24-hour follow-up, and will evaluate further neighborhood rollouts case by case.
