Philadelphia Art Museum Names Daniel H. Weiss Director and CEO

Trustees turned to the former Met leader to stabilize operations following weeks of governance turmoil.

Overview

  • Weiss was approved by a unanimous board vote and will start on December 1 with a contract running through at least 2028.
  • Weiss previously consulted for the museum’s board, according to a museum spokesperson.
  • Former chief Sasha Suda was terminated on November 4 after an outside law-firm review focused on her compensation, and she has since sued; the museum says the lawsuit is without merit.
  • Immediate priorities include addressing backlash to a recent rebrand, tackling operating deficits and deferred maintenance, and revisiting stalled projects such as the Perelman annex and an east-steps expansion.
  • Weiss, an art historian and former president and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will oversee all operations in Philadelphia after recent academic posts at Johns Hopkins and prior presidencies at Haverford and Lafayette.
