Philadelphia Art Commission Approves Moving Rocky Statue to Top of Museum Steps

Creative Philadelphia will exhibit the original inside this spring before installing it at the summit in the fall.

Overview

  • The commission voted 4–1, with one abstention, to advance the plan to place the statue atop the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s east steps.
  • Under the approved plan, the original 1982 A. Thomas Schomberg sculpture will be displayed inside the museum from April to August, then installed on the steps in the fall.
  • The statue currently at the top is a loan from Sylvester Stallone and will remain outside during the exhibition before returning to his private collection.
  • Project costs are budgeted at $150,000 to $250,000, and the city will add a “Rocky Shuttle” to help visitors with mobility needs reach the top of the steps.
  • The installation calls for a new pedestal set about 14 feet back near Rocky’s embedded shoe prints, and a yet-to-be-determined sculpture will replace the piece at the bottom of the steps.
