Phase 2 Stabilization Completed at Empire Towers as Perimeter Is Lifted

Engineers have certified the building as no longer at risk of collapse and contractors will spend the next four to six weeks clearing access to trapped vehicles before permanent repairs next year.

Overview

  • Officials confirmed late Thursday that Phase 2 emergency stabilization at Empire Towers in Glen Burnie is finished and structural engineers say the building is no longer at imminent risk of collapse.
  • The 150-foot safety perimeter has been removed and surrounding roadways and neighboring businesses have been cleared to reopen after more than three months of closures.
  • About 100 vehicles were trapped when unpermitted work on July 9 shifted the parking-garage slab and exposed rebar, and crews previously removed nearly half the cars where access allowed.
  • Contractors will spend four to six weeks working inside the garage to create a path around newly installed lateral bracing and remove the remaining vehicles before tenants can retrieve belongings.
  • Permanent structural repairs are planned for next year and nearby businesses say the lifted perimeter should help restore customer traffic and steady operations.
