Phase 1 of Kerala Local Body Elections Under Way Across Seven Districts

The contests are widely viewed as a gauge of political sentiment ahead of the Assembly race.

Overview

  • Polls run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with all voters present at closing time allowed to cast ballots.
  • Phase 1 covers 11,168 wards in 595 local bodies with 13,283,789 eligible voters, including 70,32,444 women, 62,51,219 men, 126 transgender voters and 456 overseas electors.
  • A total of 36,630 candidates are contesting in this phase, including 19,573 women, 17,056 men and one transgender candidate.
  • The remaining districts vote on December 11, with counting for all 1,199 local bodies set for December 13.
  • Union Minister Suresh Gopi cast his ballot, while Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and V.D. Satheesan urged participation, with Satheesan voting in Kochi.
