PharmEasy Report Finds Half of Indians Tested Have High or Irregular Blood Sugar

The analysis links elevated glucose to abnormalities across liver, kidney, lipid, heart, thyroid parameters.

Overview

  • The report draws on more than 4 million diagnostic test results and about 19 million medicine orders collected from January 2021 to September 2025 across 29 states and Union Territories.
  • One-third of HbA1c results fell in the diabetic range and one-quarter indicated prediabetes, meaning over half of those tested showed irregular blood sugar.
  • Elevated readings are appearing at younger ages and peak after 60, with 51.9% of men and 45.43% of women testing high and women’s rates rising more sharply after menopause.
  • Southern and coastal regions recorded higher levels, including Puducherry at 63%, Odisha at 61%, Tamil Nadu at 56% and Goa at 54%, compared with Himachal Pradesh at 41%.
  • More than 90% of people with high sugar had other abnormalities, and individuals who retested within six months saw about a 22% improvement in their sugar levels.
