PG&E Switches 6,000 Richmond Customers Back to Grid After Planned Outage

The move follows a week of noisy generators that spurred renewed calls for compensation and oversight.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co., which has been running seven noisy generators in San Francisco’s Richmond District to provide alternative power, says residents could be back to grid power as soon as Monday. 
More than 11,000 PG&E customers were without power after a transformer in the Richmond neighborhood caught fire.

Overview

  • An unplanned outage Sunday night cut power to about 11,000 customers in the Richmond, Presidio and Golden Gate Park areas before service was restored by 10:15 p.m., according to PG&E.
  • PG&E then carried out a planned switchover around midnight to remove seven temporary generators at 24th Avenue and Balboa and return roughly 6,000 customers to grid power.
  • PG&E said extensive repairs at the Mission substation are still underway and that the generators will remain staged in case they are needed for the final phase, cautioning more outages or generator use could still occur.
  • Residents near the generators reported sustained noise as high as 85–100 decibels indoors, and PG&E offered hotel stays with $200 per day for food and expedited claims for those who declined relocation.
  • The Sunset District logged another outage Saturday affecting about 6,000 customers for several hours, prompting Supervisor Alan Wong and local groups to demand hearings, clearer multilingual claims help, larger credits for residents and businesses, and consideration of public power options.
