PG&E Monitors Potential Power Shutoffs in Bay Area Ahead of Strong Winds

Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties are on watch under forecasted near-critical fire weather with PG&E issuing advance notifications to vulnerable customers.

Overview

  • Gusty winds of 20 to 35 mph are expected in the East Bay Hills, Eastern Santa Clara Hills and Gabilan Range through Saturday, as afternoon humidity drops below 25 percent.
  • The National Weather Service has labeled these conditions near-critical and warned of fast-moving grass fires from Thursday through Sunday.
  • PG&E has placed parts of Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties under PSPS watch and will make shutoff decisions based on humidity, vegetation dryness and wind thresholds.
  • Customers can sign up for text or phone alerts on PG&E’s website, and those in the Medical Baseline Program will receive advance notice before any power shutoffs; community resource centers are slated to open if outages occur.
  • Berkeley City Council approved a strict wildfire response plan with Zone Zero standards that will take effect in May 2026.
