PGA Tour Suspends Golfers Vince India and Jake Staiano for Betting Violations

Vince India and Jake Staiano, Korn Ferry Tour members, are under a six and three-month suspension respectively for betting on PGA Tour competitions, marking the first time that professional golfers have been disciplined for betting on tournaments; however, there is no evidence the golfers bet on tournaments they were playing in.

  • PGA Tour has suspended Vince India for six months and Jake Staiano for three months for betting on PGA Tour competitions. The suspensions began in September 2023 and will end in March and December 2024 respectively.
  • It is the first time in the history of professional golf that players have been disciplined for betting on tournaments. However, neither India nor Staiano bet on tournaments they were participating in.
  • Vince India, 34, and Jake Staiano, 26, both turned pro in 2011 and 2019 respectively, and are members of the Korn Ferry Tour, the developmental feeder of the PGA Tour. India has career earnings of $662,823 while Staiano has made $30,910.
  • These suspensions follow similar incidents in other sports, the NHL suspended Ottawa Senators' Shane Pinto for 41 games for sports betting, and at least 10 NFL players have recently been disciplined for gambling.
  • Following the U.S. Supreme Court's clearance for legalized sports wagering in 2018, there has been over $220 billion wagered on sports in the U.S., showing a growing concern of gambling in sports.
