Pew Survey: AI Awareness Is Uneven and Concern Outweighs Excitement Worldwide

A slim majority say they trust national regulators at least somewhat, with views shaped by age, education, internet use and political alignment.

  • A median 34% across 25 countries say they have heard or read a lot about AI, 47% have heard a little and 14% have heard nothing.
  • A median 34% are more concerned than excited about greater AI use, 42% are equally concerned and excited, and 16% are more excited than concerned.
  • Trust in regulation registers a median 55% with at least some confidence and 32% with no trust, led by India at 89% and lowest in Greece at 22%.
  • Awareness skews higher among younger adults, men, the more educated and those online almost constantly, while concern is higher among older adults, women, the less educated and less frequent internet users.
  • Country patterns diverge sharply, with 53% in Japan versus 12% in Kenya saying they have heard a lot about AI, and in 19 countries those more excited than concerned are more likely to trust national regulators; supporters of governing parties also express higher trust.
