Pew Poll Finds Trump at 37% as Republican Backing of His Agenda Falls

New data points to softening within the GOP that could reshape congressional loyalty ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Overview

  • Only 27% of Americans say they support most or all of the president’s policies, down from 35% last year, with the decline coming entirely from Republicans.
  • Republican confidence in core traits has slipped, including a fall in those saying he acts ethically in office from 55% to 42%, with lower ratings also for respect for democratic values and mental fitness.
  • A growing majority of Republicans and GOP leaners (61%) say congressional Republicans do not have an obligation to back Trump if they disagree with him, up from 55% last year.
  • The survey of 8,512 adults was conducted Jan. 20–26 and overlapped the Minneapolis Border Patrol shooting of Alex Pretti, an episode widely cited in coverage as intensifying backlash to immigration enforcement.
  • The White House disputes the findings and points to friendlier polling, while Pew also reports that 50% say the administration’s actions have been worse than expected.
