Pew: One in Five U.S. Adults Now Gets News on TikTok

A recent executive order sets up a possible shift to U.S. majority ownership, a process still pending.

Overview

  • TikTok’s share of U.S. adults who regularly get news rose to 20% in 2025, up from 3% in 2020, the fastest growth among platforms studied by Pew.
  • News use is concentrated among younger cohorts, with 43% of adults under 30 and 25% of those 30–49 reporting regular news consumption on the app.
  • Among adult TikTok users, 55% say they regularly get news on the platform, a level comparable to user rates on X, Facebook, and Truth Social.
  • Pew’s findings come from a nationally representative survey of 5,153 U.S. adults conducted August 18–24, 2025.
  • President Trump signed an executive order outlining a path for a potential deal that would reduce ByteDance’s stake below 20% and shift majority ownership to designated U.S. investors, with final terms still to be worked out.
