Petrobras Identifies Hydrocarbons Offshore Amapá

Proving a new oil frontier for Brazil will require more drilling, regulatory approval and environmental study to establish commercial viability.

Overview

  • Petrobras announced late Friday, August 14 that electrical well logs and rock samples from the Morpho exploratory well in the Foz do Amazonas basin show the presence of hydrocarbons, which can indicate oil or gas.
  • The Morpho well sits about 175 km off Amapá in roughly 2,886 meters of water and is drilled in block FZA-M-59, where Petrobras holds 100% interest and acts as operator.
  • Ibama approved only exploratory research for the first well in October 2025, so any move toward commercial production will need additional environmental licensing and technical appraisal.
  • Petrobras plans more wells and has budgeted multi‑year investment in the Margem Equatorial under its 2026–2030 plan, and the company says production could be possible in roughly six to seven years if commercial volumes are confirmed.
  • Environmental groups and scientists warn the region is ecologically sensitive, while official studies such as the EPE estimate substantial recoverable volumes in the basin, making the next appraisal wells and regulatory reviews decisive for local jobs, climate policy and regional development.
