Petrobras Finds Second Oil Interval in Morpho Well Off Amapá

The discovery boosts hopes that the Margem Equatorial can help replenish Brazil’s oil reserves, with commercial viability to be decided by further delimitation drilling and pending legal and environmental rulings.

Overview

  • Petrobras confirmed on Friday that continued drilling at the Morpho well (block FZA-M-59) in the Foz do Amazonas identified a second oil-bearing interval using electric logs, rock indications and fluid samples.
  • Company leaders described the new oil as good quality and said laboratory analyses and data integration are still under way as the rig finishes work later this month.
  • Petrobras plans to drill three delimitation wells starting in January 2027 to assess volume and commerciality, but those wells require new environmental licensing from Ibama before they can proceed.
  • The ANP approved the technical configuration of 501 new offshore blocks across 11 sectors in the Margem Equatorial after the UN expanded Brazil’s continental shelf, but those blocks are not yet slated for immediate offer and need further study.
  • The Ministério Público Federal has asked a court to suspend the Morpho environmental licence over a prior chemical spill and consultation concerns, creating legal uncertainty that could delay further work and affect local fishing and traditional communities.
