Military Maps Possible Unexploded Munitions at Pampas de Reque as Army Begins Clearance

Officials must secure the site and obtain formal safety certification before a Vatican verification team visits in late August.

Overview

  • The Peruvian Air Force warned that a superficial inspection found metallic remnants and about 40 aerial 30 mm munitions with fuzes in and around Pampas de Reque, a former air- and ground-fire range.
  • The FAP stressed its check was not exhaustive and said subsurface ordnance cannot be ruled out, advising that any removal be done only by authorized specialists or by controlled destruction on site.
  • Lambayeque’s governor said the contaminated sector will not be used for the papal mass and that the Army, the Seventh Brigade and the demining school have begun clearance work.
  • The Army has a 60-day plan to clear roughly 250–350 hectares first, while the regional government continues planning to enable up to 1,000 hectares of the 3,000-hectare parcel to host up to one to 1.5 million people.
  • A Vatican verification team will inspect progress in late August and the November papal visit remains scheduled but will depend on independent safety certification and cleared areas for the mass.
