Peru’s Transport Ministry Launches El Niño Continuity Plan for Lima Transit

The plan uses a geovisor tied to ENFEN alerts to trigger real-time detours and protective measures.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Transport and Communications, through the ATU, presented and began implementing the operational continuity plan Saturday, activating measures across the Metropolitano, Metro Lines 1 and 2 and complementary corridors.
  • To reduce heat-related illnesses the plan adds deflectors and wider-opening windows on Metropolitano buses, installs shade canopies and water fountains at Naranjal, Matellini and Chimpu Ocllo terminals, and increases medical staff at stations.
  • To prevent flooding the Metro has stepped up waterproofing, gutter cleaning and technical checks of drains and pumps with special attention to underground station entrances on Line 2.
  • The ATU rolled out contingency detours and driver training so bus and corridor operators can reroute quickly when ENFEN warnings or the geovisor identify flood or huaico risk near key routes.
  • Officials say the measures aim to keep services running and cut emergency responses for passengers, with the geovisor and ENFEN alerts providing near‑real‑time coordination for vulnerable areas such as corridors near the Río Rímac.
