Peru’s Interim Attorney General Sets Jan. 6 Date to Disband Special Prosecutor Teams

Tomás Gálvez says the units failed to deliver, prompting a transfer of their cases to specialized prosecutors.

Overview

  • He said the institutional decision was taken on Dec. 19 and that the teams are “practically” already dissolved.
  • The affected units include those that worked on the Lava Jato, Los Cuellos Blancos del Puerto and Efficop investigations.
  • Gálvez argues the special teams have not produced expected results and fostered “cover‑ups” and “impunity,” as well as internal persecution.
  • Case files will move to specialized prosecutorial offices, which he says have coordinators capable of handling the investigations more efficiently.
  • He cited the slow progress of the Susana Villarán case as an example and recalled stating on Sept. 29 that these groups should cease to exist subject to the Junta de Fiscales Supremos.
