Peru’s Interim Attorney General Removes Two Prosecutors Who Were Probing Him, Citing Misconduct

An Oct. 30 resolution reassigned them to their original posts, prompting claims that sensitive anti-corruption cases are being slowed.

Overview

  • Carolina Delgado and Alejandra Cárdenas were removed from the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Committed by Public Officials and sent back to Sullana and Arequipa, respectively.
  • Both prosecutors say they were advancing inquiries tied to the ‘Los Cuellos Blancos del Puerto’ network, including a preliminary probe of Tomás Gálvez for alleged bribery and influence peddling.
  • Delgado says her ouster followed her confirmation of that preliminary inquiry in an official response; the removal was formalized by a resolution published in El Peruano on October 30.
  • Gálvez defended the decision on RPP, alleging the prosecutors engaged in “cosas indebidas” against him and arguing they erred by cooperating with a provincial probe into a supreme prosecutor, which he says only Congress, the JNJ or the Public Ministry chief may investigate.
  • Cárdenas had also handled diligences involving former Attorney General Patricia Benavides and former JNJ members, raising concerns about continuity and oversight of multiple sensitive investigations.
