Peru’s Electoral Court Warns Critical Funding Gap Puts 2026 Vote at Risk

The JNE says the S/390 million approved falls short of the more than S/553 million it needs, jeopardizing the transparency of the April 12 election.

Overview

  • The JNE reported a shortfall between the S/390 million approved and a system-wide need exceeding S/553 million less than six months before voting day.
  • President Roberto Burneo cautioned that insufficient funds could compromise organization, oversight and transparency, with training, printing, polling-site setup and remote deployments flagged as most vulnerable.
  • The electoral authority said it is coordinating with the Economy Ministry and Congress to secure additional resources, but the financing gap remains unresolved.
  • The JNE affirmed that parties must filter aspirants now, with formal qualification of candidacies starting on December 23 and final, vetted lists due by March 14.
  • To streamline vetting, the JNE launched the Declara Más sworn pre-filing platform and said it has taken legal steps, including appeals to the Constitutional Tribunal, to protect the electoral calendar.
