Peru’s Culture Ministry Files Complaint Over Racist Abuse on Metropolitano Bus

Prosecutors will now assess a complaint that cites the Penal Code’s discrimination offense carrying up to three years in prison.

Overview

  • A viral video recorded by passenger Roger García shows a woman hurling racist slurs at riders, including “Serranos son y serranos morirán,” on a Metropolitano bus in Lima.
  • Authorities identified the woman as Carmen Alejandra Argumedo Alegre, a host linked to the Hinchas al Aire podcast, and she subsequently closed or deleted her social media accounts.
  • The Ministry of Culture’s Procuraduría filed a formal complaint to the Public Ministry naming Argumedo, calling the incident an act of ethnic‑racial discrimination.
  • The Defensoría del Pueblo condemned the verbal aggression and urged immediate investigations, noting that from 4,737 discrimination complaints through 2022 only 25 reached final sentences.
  • Hinchas al Aire issued a statement distancing itself from the remarks and said it is evaluating her continuity, as the ATU was urged to act within its remit to address discrimination on the transport system.
