Peru’s Congress Sends Betssy Chávez 10-Year Disqualification to Full Vote

A floor decision requiring a reported 66 votes would take immediate effect upon approval.

Overview

  • Congress’s Permanent Commission approved the final report 17–4 recommending a 10-year ban for the former prime minister over alleged active participation in the December 7, 2022 power grab.
  • The case stems from a constitutional complaint filed by legislator Patricia Chirinos and cites alleged violations of Articles 38, 39 and 45 of the Constitution.
  • Lady Camones and Jorge Montoya were designated to present the accusation to the plenary, which is now tasked with the decisive vote.
  • If the sanction passes, the disqualification would be effective immediately and the resolution would be sent to the Attorney General’s Office.
  • Separately, Chávez remains under travel restrictions after a Constitutional Tribunal ruling freed her from pretrial detention, and she faces an oral trial for alleged rebellion with prosecutors seeking a 25-year sentence.
