Peru’s Congress Removes Kira Alcarraz From Panels as Podemos Perú Loses Isabel Cortez

The plenary voted 80–0 to strip Alcarraz of committee roles following her resignation under ethics scrutiny.

Overview

  • Congress President Fernando Rospigliosi announced the reshuffle on November 19, and the plenary approved it with 80 votes in favor, none against and no abstentions.
  • Alcarraz was taken off the Ethics Committee, the Permanent Commission, and the committees of Foreign Trade, National Defense, Justice, Budget (as an alternate) and Andean Peoples.
  • She also left the Economy Committee, where Darwin Espinoza was named to take her seat.
  • Alcarraz had earlier quit the Podemos Perú caucus and party, pledging to legislate with independence as she faces probes over a verbal aggression against a journalist and an allegedly irregular hire.
  • Hours later, congresswoman Isabel Cortez submitted an irrevocable resignation from the Podemos Perú bench, citing personal and conscience reasons, while party leaders offered no immediate public response.
