Peru’s Congress Ousts Dina Boluarte, José Jerí Sworn In as Interim President

Under constitutional rules, he must call general elections within five days for a vote within 120 days.

Overview

  • Lawmakers approved Boluarte’s removal for “permanent moral incapacity” with a lopsided vote after a rapid session that advanced four vacancia motions and proceeded to a final vote without debate.
  • Boluarte did not appear before the chamber, and her lawyer denounced the speed of the process as a violation of due process and the right to prepare a defense.
  • A move to censure the Congressional leadership failed, clearing the way for congressional president José Enrique Jerí Oré to assume the presidency by constitutional succession.
  • In his inaugural address, Jerí called citizen insecurity the country’s main threat and vowed to “declare war” on delinquency with support from the National Police and Armed Forces.
  • Jerí’s ascent comes under scrutiny due to prior controversies, including a sexual-assault case that prosecutors archived in August 2025 for lack of evidence, as he assumes a transitional mandate to organize elections.
