Peru’s Comptroller Audits 466 Police Stations as Early Checks Reveal Widespread Deficiencies

Results will guide corrective actions after the November 5 wrap-up.

Overview

  • Nearly 700 auditors are inspecting stations in all 25 regions under the “Comisarías Básicas PNP 2025” operation, covering 35% of the country’s 1,318 precincts through November 5.
  • Initial visits in Lima found four-decade-old firearms, deteriorated ballistic vests, too few radios, and damaged facilities; the Interior Ministry reports only 9,173 operational vests for about 130,000 officers.
  • Auditors also flagged operational and administrative gaps, including missing sector patrol plans, scarce laptops and printers, and late forwarding of complaints involving violence against women.
  • Regional checks in La Libertad recorded humidity damage, exposed fire-system wiring, rusted restraints, and ballistic vests beyond their service life.
  • In Junín, the Huancayo station was described as in critical condition, lacking internet, adequate vehicles and proper gear, while extortion complaints rose from two to 18 logbooks.
