Peru Watchdog Finds 2,582 Failings at Police Stations, Including 1,730 Broken Vehicles

The audit’s findings were delivered to the Interior Ministry for urgent corrective action.

Overview

  • An audit of 485 police stations conducted from October 29 to November 4, 2025 identified widespread operational, infrastructure and management deficiencies.
  • Out of 4,121 police vehicles reviewed, 1,730 were inoperative, curbing patrol capacity in high-crime areas such as Lima Metropolitan, Áncash and Puno.
  • Computer and office equipment were heavily degraded, with 1,823 of 6,835 computers, 2,132 of 4,049 printers and 141 of 532 scanners not functioning.
  • Infrastructure problems included more than half of stations exceeding 30 years of age and 72 built with adobe, with cited deficiencies at Palacio Viejo (Arequipa), Sitajara (Tacna) and Punta Moreno–Gran Chimú (La Libertad).
  • Management gaps were flagged at multiple posts, with 39 lacking minimum staffing, 208 without an approved 2025 sector patrol plan and 107 not publishing a crime map.
